Assessment of the J’aime fruits et légumes card

An assessment of the implementation and the initial results of its health effects on beneficiaries is conducted by an interdisciplinary team comprised of six co-researchers. This assessment is led by Geneviève Mercille, a researcher with the Centre de recherche en santé publique (CReSP) at the Université de Montréal and professor in the Département de nutrition.

As experts through experience, people living in poverty are involved in the assessment of the pilot project. This important collaboration is possible thanks to a partnership with the Research Chair in the Reduction of Social Inequalities in Health at UQAM.

How are the data gathered?

The research team uses several methods for gathering information in order to understand how the J’aime fruits et légumes card functions in practice (use, context, obstacles, facilitating aspects) and its effects on health, including:

  • Interviews with merchants and project partners to understand their role and their challenges.
  • Anonymous visits to businesses for direct observation.
  • Before and after questionnaires regarding card use among 500 participants to observe the changes in their eating habits, health and well being.
  • Accompanying participants to stores to experience how the card is used.
  • Life stories (lengthy interviews) to better understand the participants’ journey and how the card impacts their daily lives.
How will this assessment be used?

The results will allow for a better understanding of what is working well, what could be improved.

Recommendations will be made to enhance the development of similar measures or to consider a greater deployment of the J’aime fruits et légumes card to other regions of Québec.

How can I participate in the assessment?

Those responsible for coordinating the assessment of the J’aime fruits et légumes card pilot project can be contacted by email.
